Burkina Faso Dissolves Electoral Commission, Citing ‘Foreign Influence’

Burkina Faso’s parliament has officially dissolved the country’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), describing it as a “waste of money.”

The decision means that the Ministry of Territorial Administration — which is responsible for managing the country’s regional and local affairs — will now take over the organization and supervision of future elections.

President Ibrahim Traoré reportedly supported the move, calling the Electoral Commission a “tool for peddling foreign influence.”

This development is part of a broader effort by the military-led government to limit external interference and strengthen national sovereignty.

In recent months, Burkina Faso has cut ties with several foreign partners, withdrawn from certain international alliances, and aligned more closely with other Sahel nations like Mali and Niger, which have also adopted similar anti-foreign policies following coups in their respective countries.

Observers say the dissolution of INEC could mark a significant shift in how Burkina Faso handles future democratic processes, with questions emerging about transparency, independence, and accountability in upcoming elections.
