Galamsey Fight: Woman Begs for Mercy After Arrest for Illegal Mining in Berekum West

A woman arrested for engaging in illegal mining—popularly known as galamsey—at Benkasa in the Berekum West District has reportedly pleaded for clemency after learning she could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

The arrest was part of a joint security operation led by the Berekum West District Chief Executive, Hon. Collins Asomah, in collaboration with the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Charles Asamoah, and the Berekum Police Command.

According to officials, several individuals were apprehended during the operation, which targeted illegal mining activities that have been causing severe environmental destruction in the area.

Authorities say the suspects will be processed for court as investigations continue. The DCE reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to enforcing the government’s anti-galamsey directives and protecting water bodies and farmlands in the district.

Local residents have since praised the operation, calling for sustained efforts to clamp down on illegal miners who continue to degrade the environment despite numerous warnings.
