Tension has gripped the Upper East Region following a shocking attack on Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) personnel stationed in the Tempane District. According to reports by 3News, a patrol team of Immigration officers was ambushed and shot by unidentified gunmen late Sunday night near the Pulimakom border enclave.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the officers were carrying out their regular border patrol duties when the assailants opened fire unexpectedly, leaving some officers injured. The attackers reportedly fled the scene immediately after the incident, disappearing into nearby bushland.
Security sources have since confirmed that reinforcement teams from both the Ghana Immigration Service and the Ghana Police Service have been deployed to the area to restore calm and begin investigations into the motive and identity of the attackers.
Though authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of casualties, the attack has sparked serious concern over the growing insecurity and cross-border threats along Ghana’s northern frontier, particularly near Burkina Faso and Togo.
The Upper East Region, especially border towns like Pulimakom, Paga, and Bawku, has in recent years witnessed heightened security tensions due to smuggling networks, human trafficking, and fears of extremist infiltration from the Sahel region.
In a statement, local security analysts urged government to “equip frontline immigration officers with proper logistics, intelligence support, and protection” to ensure safety in such volatile zones.
Photos from the scene circulating online show bullet-riddled Immigration Service vehicles and officers being assisted by colleagues and health personnel.
As of this report, investigations are still ongoing, and the Ghana Immigration Service is expected to release an official statement on the incident.
