A tragic incident has occurred at Gbintiri in the East Mamprusi Municipality of the North East Region, where a 51-year-old pillion rider, identified as Mawutor Banakar, was allegedly shot and killed by a police officer during a confrontation at a checkpoint.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim and another man were travelling from Gaboni in the Northern Region to the Gbintiri market when they were stopped by police officers at a checkpoint.
Reports indicate that one of the policemen allegedly demanded GH¢10 from the travellers before allowing them to pass. The men are said to have questioned the demand and offered GH¢5 instead, sparking a heated exchange with the officer.
During the confrontation, the policeman reportedly opened fire, hitting the pillion rider in the upper arm. He was rushed to the Gbintiri Health Centre but was pronounced dead on arrival.
However, the police have provided a different account of the incident. According to their statement, the pillion rider allegedly attempted to snatch the officer’s rifle during a search, leading to a struggle in which the gun accidentally discharged.
The officer involved has since been arrested and placed in custody to assist with investigations.
As investigations continue, the Gbintiri community remains tense, mourning the loss of a man whose life ended over what many describe as a needless and avoidable confrontation.
