• Backlash trails AWAL Mohammed over derogatory remark against Shatta Wale fans during EOCO arrest debate

Awal Mohammed has issued a formal and unreserved apology following public backlash over comments he made during a live appearance on Joy News’ morning show, where he was part of a panel discussion on governance and law enforcement issues.

The controversy arose during a heated debate on the arrest of award-winning dancehall artiste Shatta Wale by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) and the broader issue of what AWAL Mohammed described as the government’s increasingly stringent bail conditions. In the course of making his arguments, AWAL Mohammed referred to some Shatta Wale supporters who had gathered to show solidarity with the musician during his EOCO arrest as “junkies.”

The remark immediately drew criticism from sections of the public, particularly from Shatta Wale’s fan base, who viewed the comment as disrespectful, stigmatizing, and unnecessary. Many argued that the supporters had merely exercised their right to show loyalty and support for an artiste they admire, and should not have been labelled in a derogatory manner.

In response to the growing criticism, AWAL Mohammed released a public statement acknowledging his mistake and offering a sincere apology. He explained that his intention during the discussion was to strongly condemn what he sees as unfair bail conditions and not to attack or demean any group of people. He admitted that the use of the term “junkies” was inappropriate, unnecessary, and out of sync with his personal values and public conduct.

According to AWAL Mohammed, he holds deep respect for the passion, commitment, and loyalty of fans, including those of Shatta Wale. He emphasized that his words were spoken in the heat of the debate and did not reflect how he genuinely views the supporters who had gone to EOCO to stand by the musician during his arrest.

He further expressed regret for any hurt, anger, or misunderstanding his comments may have caused, stating that public discourse, especially on national platforms, must be guided by responsibility, restraint, and respect. AWAL Mohammed accepted full responsibility for the comment and acknowledged that public figures must be mindful of their language, given the influence of their words.

In concluding his apology, AWAL Mohammed appealed to Shatta Wale, his fans, and the general public for forgiveness, and called for a positive way forward. He stressed the need for unity, mutual respect, and constructive dialogue, particularly when discussing sensitive issues involving governance, law enforcement, and popular public figures.

The incident has reignited conversations about the role of commentators and public analysts in shaping public opinion, as well as the importance of maintaining civility in media debates. While reactions remain mixed, some observers have commended AWAL Mohammed for taking responsibility and offering a public apology, viewing it as a necessary step toward easing tensions and restoring respectful engagement in public discussions.
