• Rigging Allegations Rock NPP as Leadership Begins Expulsion Process Against Frimpong Boateng
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally commenced internal disciplinary processes aimed at expelling Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng from the party, following what it describes as damaging and highly reprehensible public comments made by the former minister.
In a press statement dated January 13, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP said it took due notice of remarks made by Professor Frimpong Boateng during an interview on Channel One TV on Monday, January 12, 2026. During that interview, the former Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Minister reportedly described the NPP as a “fake party” and further stated that he no longer considers himself a member of the party.
According to the NPP, the comments did not end there. The party said Professor Frimpong Boateng went on to make additional disparaging remarks and alleged, among other things, that the party’s 2023 presidential primary was rigged in favour of Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, who emerged as the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 general elections.
The party has categorically rejected these claims, describing them as baseless, unsubstantiated, and unfortunate. In the statement, the NPP emphasized that the 2023 presidential primary was conducted in a free, fair, transparent, and credible manner, faithfully reflecting the will of party delegates. The party further noted that the outcome of the primary was widely accepted by all candidates who participated, as well as by well-meaning members across the country.
“The New Patriotic Party unequivocally rejects Professor Frimpong Boateng’s characterization of the party,” the statement said, adding that allegations of rigging run contrary to the facts surrounding the conduct of the internal election.
Beyond disputing the substance of the allegations, the NPP expressed concern about the broader implications of the comments for party unity and integrity. The leadership described Professor Frimpong Boateng’s conduct and utterances as inimical to the core values, cohesion, and discipline of the party, particularly coming from a senior figure who has benefited from the party’s platform over the years.
As a result, the party announced that it has invoked the relevant provisions of its constitution to begin the necessary processes to expel him, stressing that the action will be carried out strictly in accordance with due process. This indicates that the matter is expected to be handled through established internal disciplinary structures rather than through arbitrary decision-making.
Professor Kwabena Frimpong Boateng is a well-known figure within the NPP and Ghanaian public life, having served as a cabinet minister and previously gained international recognition in the medical field. His public criticism of the party therefore represents a significant development and underscores ongoing tensions within the political tradition as it navigates the post-primaries and post-election period.
Political observers note that the move to initiate expulsion proceedings reflects the party’s determination to draw a firm line against public dissent that questions its legitimacy and internal democratic processes. At the same time, it raises broader questions about internal debate, freedom of expression, and how political parties manage disagreements among senior members.
As the disciplinary process unfolds, attention will remain focused on how the NPP applies its constitutional provisions and whether Professor Frimpong Boateng will respond formally to the accusations and the impending expulsion. Whatever the outcome, the episode has already added a new layer to the ongoing conversation about unity, accountability, and internal democracy within one of Ghana’s major political parties.
