President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, widely known as Baba Jamal, following allegations of voter inducement during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

Baba Jamal, who was contesting in the primaries, is alleged to have been involved in vote-buying activities during the exercise. Although similar accusations were reportedly made against other aspirants, the Presidency emphasized that he was the only serving public officer among the candidates, making his case particularly significant from a governance standpoint.

In a directive issued to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, President Mahama stated that the action was necessary to uphold the standards of conduct expected of public officials. The President stressed that while the NDC, through its General Secretary, has initiated internal investigations into the allegations, the government could not overlook the ethical implications tied to a sitting High Commissioner.

The recall, according to the Presidency, is not intended to prejudge the outcome of the party’s internal processes. However, it is aimed at safeguarding the integrity of public office and preventing any perception of impropriety or breach of the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.

The decision takes immediate effect. The Minister for Foreign Affairs has been instructed to undertake the required administrative and diplomatic procedures to formalize the recall.

The statement was signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament and Spokesperson to the President, who also serves as Minister for Government Communications.
