• Teacher Safety in Question After Court Remands Suspects Over West Africa Senior High School Assault Case
Three individuals, including two students, have been arrested in connection with the violent assault on teachers at West Africa Senior High School in Adenta, Accra — an incident that has sparked widespread concern about safety within educational institutions.
The suspects were reportedly apprehended at about 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 16, 2026, and were arraigned before the Adenta Circuit Court the following day. They pleaded guilty to the charges and were remanded into police custody, with the case adjourned to March 30, 2026.
The court proceedings attracted significant attention from education authorities. Present were the Greater Accra Regional Director of Education and her deputy, municipal education directors from La Nkwantanang-Madina and Adentan, as well as heads and staff from neighbouring schools, underscoring the seriousness of the case and its implications for school security.
Following the hearing, education officials visited the school to reassure teachers and students and to help restore calm on campus. Students were advised to remain disciplined and avoid behaviours such as truancy, misconduct, and disrespect that could negatively affect their future.
Officials also expressed solidarity with the affected teachers and pledged continued support to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting educators and ensuring accountability in cases involving violence against teaching staff, stressing the need for firm action to deter future attacks.
The arrests follow the February 13, 2026 incident in which teachers were reportedly attacked after confronting unauthorized visitors on campus. The situation escalated later in the day when individuals allegedly returned with accomplices and assaulted staff members, leaving some injured and traumatized.
The incident has intensified national discussions about safety in schools and the need for stronger enforcement measures to protect teachers. Education stakeholders continue to emphasize that schools must remain secure environments conducive to teaching and learning, while investigations and legal proceedings continue.
