A 22-year-old woman has been sentenced to six months imprisonment with hard labour by the Akim Oda District Court for stealing assorted provisions valued at GH¢1,384 from a local shop.
According to the prosecution, the convict broke into the shop and made away with several items, including milk, biscuits, tomato paste, soap, sugar, and baby diapers.
She was subsequently arrested and arraigned before the court, where she pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing. The presiding judge, after considering her plea and the value of the stolen goods, handed down a six-month custodial sentence to serve as both punishment and deterrent.
The case has raised conversations in the community and among her family, with some calling for leniency for first-time offenders while others believe such actions must be met with strict punishment to discourage theft.
