In a shocking development, nine armed individuals, including persons claiming to be National Security Operatives, were arrested during a joint anti-illegal mining operation conducted by the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) on October 23, 2025.
The suspects were apprehended in the Oda River Forest Reserve in the Ashanti Region — an area long plagued by illegal mining activities threatening the environment and water bodies.
Following the arrest, the National Security Coordinating Secretariat (NSCS) swiftly initiated an internal personnel audit to verify the identities of the alleged operatives.
The audit revealed that three of the detained suspects shared names with registered National Security personnel. Among them was Issah Yakubu, a temporary operative previously assigned to the Yapei Axle Weight Station.
Efforts to reach Yakubu directly proved futile, but subsequent reports from his colleagues confirmed his presence and arrest during the illegal mining operation.
In response, the National Security Coordinator has ordered the immediate revocation of Issah Yakubu’s appointment and directed that he be prosecuted if found guilty.
Meanwhile, the two other identified operatives are under ongoing investigation. Should their involvement be confirmed, they will face immediate dismissal and criminal prosecution as part of the government’s commitment to cleansing the security service of corruption and misconduct.
This development underscores the government’s zero-tolerance stance on illegal mining (galamsey) and sends a strong message that no one is above the law, not even those entrusted to enforce it.
