47 Impounded Motorcycles: MCUG Calls on IGP to Investigate Alleged Police Misconduct at Tesano Police Station

The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana (MCUG) is calling on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to urgently investigate what it describes as persistent misconduct by police personnel at the Tesano Police Station, where 47 motorcycles have reportedly been impounded for nearly two months.

In a formal petition to the IGP, the MCUG General Secretary stated that while the union upholds the rule of law, it is increasingly alarmed by a wave of incidents allegedly involving officers stationed at Tesano. These incidents, the union says, are fueling public distrust and contradicting the President’s recent call for equality before the law.

Among the concerns raised are reports of motorists being maltreated, the unauthorized formatting of mobile phones, questionable detentions, and the continued seizure of motorcycles without clear justification. The union stressed that these actions have directly affected couriers whose livelihoods depend on their bikes.

One of the cases highlighted involves a woman who claims she reported abuse multiple times at the station but no action was taken. Another incident involved a collision between a Benz driver and a tricycle operator, during which civilians openly expressed distrust in the MTTD commander—a sign MCUG says reflects growing frustration within the community.

The union referenced comments by the President at the Chief Justice swearing-in ceremony, where he emphasized that individual misconduct within institutions can erode national credibility. MCUG also noted the IGP’s own warning that rising confrontations between civilians and officers make it essential for law enforcement to adopt proper de-escalation techniques.

MCUG is urging the Police Administration to take immediate steps including:

  • Investigating the alleged abuses at Tesano Police Station
  • Ensuring accountability and professionalism among officers
  • Releasing the 47 impounded motorcycles
  • Training personnel on de-escalation and appropriate engagement

The union concluded its appeal by stressing that rebuilding public trust requires officers to demonstrate integrity, fairness, and respect for the law.
