Kumasi Tricycle Riders Hits Streets Over Alleged KMA Extortion and Harassment

Scores of commercial tricycle operators in Kumasi have taken to the streets in a massive protest against what they describe as persistent extortion and harassment by officials of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA).

The riders, popularly known as pragia operators, say KMA taskforce members have been subjecting them to unfair treatment, including frequent seizures of their tricycles and the collection of unapproved fees. According to the angry operators, these actions are crippling their daily earnings and making it increasingly difficult to work.

The protest, which drew large numbers of riders from various parts of the city, saw the operators moving through major streets while chanting and calling on city authorities to intervene immediately. Many complained that despite several attempts to engage KMA officials, nothing has changed.

They are therefore demanding a complete halt to what they describe as unlawful operations by the KMA taskforce and a clear regulatory framework that ensures fairness and transparency in their activities.

City authorities are yet to issue an official response to the concerns raised by the protesters.
