The Tema–Mpakadan train service has suffered yet another stone attack, raising serious safety concerns among passengers and rail authorities. The latest incident, which occurred on Monday, November 10, 2025, left one of the train’s windows smashed after an unknown person hurled a stone at the moving Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train.
According to the Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA), this is the fourth stone attack recorded since the commercial operation of the Tema–Mpakadan line began on October 1, 2025. Although no injuries were reported, the damage adds to growing worries about sabotage and security lapses along the railway corridor.
Dr Frederick Appoh, the Chief Executive Officer of GRDA, confirmed the incident and assured the public that replacement parts for the broken window have already been secured. He stated that repairs would be completed soon and that the Authority is working with security agencies to prevent future attacks.
This latest attack follows several earlier attempts to disrupt or damage the train service. In October, two separate incidents were recorded — one involving a teenager who threw a stone that cracked a train’s windscreen and another where saboteurs placed a large rock on the rail track in an attempt to derail the train. Reports from investigators revealed that some individuals were allegedly offered as little as GH¢20 to commit such acts of sabotage.
The GRDA says it is collaborating with the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and local authorities, including the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, to improve security along the railway route. Plans are also underway to fence portions of the rail line to deter encroachers and unauthorized access to the tracks.
Although the attacks have so far caused only property damage, experts warn that such reckless actions could lead to serious accidents, loss of lives, or derailment if not swiftly addressed. The Tema–Mpakadan train represents a key national investment aimed at boosting transportation and trade between the Eastern Corridor and Tema Port, and its safety remains a top priority for government and stakeholders.
The public has been urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious behavior near the rail lines to the nearest police station.
The repeated acts of vandalism threaten to undermine years of effort and investment into reviving Ghana’s rail sector. Authorities are therefore calling for community cooperation to ensure that this modern transport system is protected from further attacks.
