The project focuses on restoring malfunctioning streetlights, installing new ones in poorly lit communities, and introducing thousands of solar-powered units across the country. According to officials, the programme will enhance public safety, support night-time businesses, and reduce pressure on the national electricity grid.
Government indicates that about 23,500 solar streetlights are expected to be installed nationwide, covering more than 700 kilometres of roads and underserved communities. With street-lighting consuming an estimated 200–300MW during peak hours, the shift to solar is seen as a major step toward cutting energy costs while promoting greener, more sustainable public lighting solutions.
The initiative includes a two-phase plan: the central government will handle the first two years of maintenance and operations, after which the responsibility will shift to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies. Authorities say this approach will ensure nationwide consistency while preparing local assemblies to manage the infrastructure in the long term.
However, the programme faces challenges, including increasing incidents of cable theft and vandalism. Government has appealed to residents, security agencies and local authorities to support the protection of street-lighting infrastructure to avoid disruptions.
Regional data shows steady progress, with about half of the planned installations already completed in the Greater Accra Region alone. Officials say the project aligns with the broader national 24-hour economic strategy, which seeks to expand commercial activity beyond daytime hours by improving safety, infrastructure and energy efficiency.
As the rollout continues across all regions, government believes the initiative will play a critical role in building safer communities, supporting businesses that operate after dark, and laying the foundation for a vibrant, modern, round-the-clock economy.
