Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Mahama Ayariga, has urged the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, to focus on resolving the ongoing conflicts in Northern Ghana before embarking on his proposed peace mission to Ukraine.
According to Ayariga, while Ghana’s commitment to global peace is commendable, charity must begin at home. He noted that the protracted ethnic and chieftaincy conflicts in the northern parts of the country — particularly in Bawku, Yendi, and other conflict-prone areas — continue to claim lives, displace families, and disrupt local economies.
> “Before the Speaker goes to Ukraine to mediate, he should check his own background and help us deal with the conflicts in Northern Ghana,” Ayariga stated.
The MP emphasized that the people in Northern Ghana have suffered for decades due to unresolved disputes, and national leadership must prioritize domestic peace efforts over international engagements.
Speaker Bagbin recently announced plans to join a global parliamentary initiative aimed at supporting mediation and reconstruction in war-torn Ukraine, a move that has drawn both praise and criticism.
While many appreciate Ghana’s growing diplomatic role, Ayariga insists that the same energy should be directed toward achieving lasting peace within Ghana’s own borders, arguing that peace at home strengthens the country’s credibility abroad.
