The Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana (MCUG) has expressed heartfelt appreciation to Osman Ayariga, Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), for recognizing and supporting the union, especially during the recent Africa Youth Day celebrations.
According to the union, Mr. Ayariga’s encouragement for young people to take an active role in national growth and development is inspiring and aligns with their mission to empower Ghana’s youth through decent and sustainable work.
The MCUG also backed the Youth Ministry’s appeal for the youth to avoid destructive habits such as gambling and substance abuse, and instead focus on contributing positively to the country’s progress.
“As a union, we identify with the struggles of entrepreneurs such as tailors and hairdressers, who depend on government support to thrive. We appeal to the NYA and the Youth Ministry to also include motorcycle couriers in national sponsorship and empowerment programs,” the statement said.
On matters of public accountability, the union commended the Ghana Police Service’s call for citizens to record videos when they witness misconduct or rights violations. The MCUG revealed that it has advised its members to use secret cameras for protection, particularly in areas where incidents of abuse have been reported, such as the Tesano Police Station.
The union further encouraged members to use apps that automatically upload recorded footage, ensuring that evidence is preserved even if their devices are damaged or seized.
The statement also urged regulators to see beyond paperwork and certification, emphasizing the need for investment in the sector.
> “We appeal to our regulators to invest in us and not see the commission as a certificate-issuing department only. As a union, we believe in regulation, but the regulation must be fair and beneficial to the citizens," said Abugri Timothy Agengri, General Secretary of the Motorcycle Couriers Union of Ghana.
