The Ghana Police Service has invited the Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Hon. (Name withheld pending official statement), for questioning following an alleged attack on the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) taskforce in Hwidiem, Ahafo Region.
According to preliminary reports, the MP allegedly led a group of armed men who attacked members of the Anti-Galamsey Taskforce while they were on official duty in the area. The taskforce, operating under the supervision of NAIMOS, had been conducting reconnaissance to identify illegal mining sites for subsequent operations.
Eyewitnesses claim that the MP arrived at the scene with a group of men who confronted the officers, resulting in chaos and physical assault on some members of the team. Equipment belonging to the taskforce was reportedly damaged during the incident.
The Ghana Police Service has since confirmed that an official invitation has been extended to the MP to assist in investigations. Authorities have also assured the public that the matter will be handled in accordance with the law, emphasizing that no one is above the law regardless of political position or influence.
Meanwhile, the Director of Operations at NAIMOS, who narrowly escaped the attack, has condemned the incident, describing it as a major setback in the fight against illegal mining in the Ahafo Region.
