Shock in Bissau: President Embaló Arrested at Palace as Military Leadership Reportedly Stages Coup Following Sunday’s Election

Guinea-Bissau has been thrown into uncertainty following what outgoing President Umaro Sissoco Embaló has described as a coup d’état led by the country’s military leadership. The 53-year-old president says he was arrested on Wednesday, 26 November, at around 1pm while working from his office at the presidential palace.

According to President Embaló, several top government and security officials were also detained, including:

  • The Armed Forces Chief of Staff
  • The Interior Minister
  • The Deputy Chief of Staff

He reported that no physical force was used during his arrest, but insists the actions amount to an illegal overthrow of his administration.

Residents near the National Electoral Commission have reported hearing gunshots, heightening tensions as the country processes Sunday’s presidential election results.

President Embaló claims he won the election with 65% of the vote based on his own tally, though official results had not yet been announced before his arrest.

Growing Tension in Bissau

The situation remains fluid, with concerns rising over who currently controls the government. International observers and regional bodies are expected to respond as more information becomes available.

This developing story continues to unfold, and updates will follow as clearer details emerge.
