ECOWAS Unanimously Endorses President Mahama as Sole West African Candidate for AU Chairmanship in 2027

In a major diplomatic boost for Ghana, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Council of Ministers has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the sub-region’s sole candidate for the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) for the year 2027. The decision was taken during the Ninety-Fifth Ordinary Session of the Council of Ministers held in Abuja, Nigeria, on December 12, 2025.

The formal recommendation—captured in Resolution C/REC.1/12/25—emphasizes unified regional backing for Ghana as the AU’s top leadership role rotates to West Africa in 2027. The endorsement sets the stage for the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government to adopt the declaration at its upcoming session on Sunday.

A Strategic and Symbolic Choice

In the resolution, the Council of Ministers highlighted several reasons for rallying behind Ghana’s candidacy. They referenced Ghana’s longstanding contribution to ECOWAS, its influential role in regional diplomacy, and its strong international standing within continental institutions.

The ministers further emphasized the importance of increasing the representation of ECOWAS nationals in international organizations, especially in leadership roles within the African Union. The endorsement signals ECOWAS’s intention to present a unified front in supporting its candidates globally.

Mahama’s Pan-African Reputation at the Center

The endorsement carries significant political weight, especially given President Mahama’s reputation as a pan-African statesman. His prior experience as ECOWAS Chair, his mediation roles in regional conflicts, and his contributions to democratic consolidation on the continent appear to have bolstered confidence across member states.

According to the communication, Ghana expressed gratitude for the show of solidarity. Government officials noted that the unanimous backing demonstrates trust not only in the country but also in Mahama’s leadership capacity.

Next Step: Adoption by ECOWAS Heads of State

With the Council of Ministers’ endorsement secured, the final decision rests with the Authority of Heads of State and Government, which is expected to formalize the declaration. Should they approve it, Mahama will become ECOWAS’s official nominee for the AU Chairmanship in 2027, effectively giving him a clear path to the continental role.

A Strong Statement of Regional Unity

The Council of Ministers concluded its resolution by calling on member states to support Ghana vigorously during the AU election process. The message is clear: West Africa seeks to speak with one voice.

Signed by the Chair of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers, H.E. Alhaji Musa Timothy Kabba, the resolution represents a unified diplomatic effort to shape leadership at the highest level of African governance.

As Ghana celebrates this milestone, regional observers say ECOWAS’s collective endorsement reflects renewed confidence in experienced African leaders capable of steering the AU through a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
