He Is My Cousin, But I Have Not Intervened” — Akufo-Addo’s Office Denies Seeking Mahama’s Intervention in Ken Ofori-Atta’s Arrest

The Office of the Former President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has issued a firm rejoinder strongly denying media reports suggesting that the former President is seeking an audience with President John Dramani Mahama to secure assurances for the return or protection of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta.

The rejoinder, dated December 16, 2025, responds to a publication by the Herald newspaper and subsequent reports by other media outlets, which alleged that Nana Akufo-Addo was considering approaching President Mahama to negotiate “safe passage” for Mr. Ofori-Atta.

Allegations Described as Fabrication

According to the official statement, the claims attributed to the former President are “utterly false” and amount to a “total fabrication” by the publication’s source. The Office categorically stated that Nana Akufo-Addo has neither contemplated nor initiated—either directly or indirectly—any request, representation, or communication to President Mahama, his agents, or assigns on behalf of Ken Ofori-Atta.

The statement emphasizes that no such discussions have taken place and that the reports circulating in the media lack factual basis.

Commitment to Rule of Law Reaffirmed

The Office further underscored Nana Akufo-Addo’s long-standing commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law, stressing that his fidelity to constitutional principles has never been in doubt. It noted that any attempt to suggest interference in legal or judicial processes runs contrary to the former President’s publicly established record.

Clarification on Relationship With Ofori-Atta

While acknowledging that Ken Ofori-Atta’s situation is naturally of concern to the former President, the statement clarified that this concern does not translate into an attempt to interfere with lawful processes.

The Office noted two reasons for this concern:

  • Ken Ofori-Atta is a cousin of the former President.
  • He served as Minister for Finance throughout both terms of Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration.

Despite these ties, the statement was explicit that such concern does not extend to obstructing justice or influencing the rule of law in any manner.

Demand for Retraction and Publication

In a concluding remark, the Office of the Former President demanded that the media outlets responsible for the alleged misinformation reproduce the rejoinder in accordance with Nana Akufo-Addo’s rights. This, the Office stated, is necessary to set the record straight and correct the public narrative surrounding the issue.

Political Context

The rejoinder comes amid heightened public and political scrutiny surrounding former government officials, particularly those who served in key economic roles. Ken Ofori-Atta, as Finance Minister during a period marked by significant economic challenges, remains a subject of national debate, making any reports about political interventions especially sensitive.

By issuing this statement, the Office of Nana Akufo-Addo appears intent on distancing the former President from any suggestion of back-channel negotiations or attempts to influence ongoing or potential legal processes.

Signed:

Office of the Former President

H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
