A fatal road accident has claimed two lives and left about twenty-one others injured after a bus transporting members of the Believers Worship Centre, popularly known as Second Chance, was involved in a serious crash in the Central Region.

The accident occurred on the night of Wednesday, January 1, 2026, along the Assin Fosu–Kumasi highway, a major arterial road linking parts of the Central and Ashanti regions. The bus was reportedly conveying members of the Second Chance ministry who were returning from a 31st Night crossover service when the incident happened.

According to preliminary accounts, the bus ran into a crowd of people who were engaged in a street parade at Assin Dansame, a community along the stretch. The impact caused panic and confusion, with several people knocked down in the process.

Two people were confirmed dead at the scene. One of the deceased has been identified as Maame Yaa, a 21-year-old apprentice and a student of the Sunyani Technical University. The identity of the second victim is yet to be formally released by authorities, pending notification of family members.

In addition to the fatalities, about 21 persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, including fractures, head injuries, and bodily trauma. The injured were rushed to nearby health facilities, including the Assin Fosu Government Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention. Some of the victims are said to be in stable condition, while others remain under close observation.

The tragic incident triggered anger among some local residents and youth at the scene. In the heat of the moment, the bus involved in the crash was vandalised and eventually set ablaze, leading to its complete destruction before security personnel could fully secure the area.

Police officers were later deployed to restore calm and prevent further escalation. Traffic along the highway was temporarily disrupted as emergency responders worked to clear the road and assist victims.

The Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) confirmed the accident. According to officials, investigations have commenced to determine the exact cause of the crash, including the speed of the vehicle, road conditions, visibility, and whether traffic control measures were in place at the time of the street parade.

Authorities have also reiterated calls for the public to avoid road parades without police coordination, especially during festive periods, as such activities pose serious risks to both participants and motorists.

This latest tragedy once again highlights the persistent road safety challenges on Ghana’s highways, particularly during festive seasons when night travel, fatigue, speeding, and unregulated public activities increase the risk of accidents.

Road safety advocates are urging:

  • Churches and organisations to ensure safe transportation arrangements for members
  • Communities to avoid blocking highways for celebrations
  • Drivers to exercise maximum caution, especially at night

As families mourn the loss of their loved ones and the injured battle to recover, the nation is reminded of the heavy price paid when road safety protocols are ignored. Police investigations are ongoing, and further updates are expected as more official information becomes available.

This is a developing story. Updates will follow.
