The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a driver after intercepting a significant quantity of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs during a routine snap check operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was apprehended on January 26, 2026, while driving a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25. According to police, officers stationed at the Asanso checkpoint stopped the vehicle as part of ongoing security and anti-crime operations in the area.
A subsequent search of the bus uncovered nine nylon sacks concealed inside the vehicle. When opened, the sacks were found to contain a total of 713 compressed slabs of dried leaves believed to be narcotic substances. The scale of the seizure has raised concerns about the movement of suspected illicit drugs through major transit routes in the region.
Police sources indicate that during the arrest process, the suspect allegedly attempted to offer GH¢150,000 to the officers in a bid to avoid detention. The officers reportedly rejected the offer and proceeded with the arrest in line with established procedures.
The suspect remains in police custody and is assisting with investigations. Authorities say efforts are underway to trace the origin and intended destination of the suspected narcotics, as well as to identify any accomplices connected to the case.
The Ashanti South Regional Command has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying patrols and snap check operations aimed at curbing drug trafficking and related criminal activities within the region.
