The Ghana Police Service in the Upper West Region has arrested three individuals for unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition in the Wa West District.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service, Wa/UWR, the arrests were made during a routine patrol operation on Monday, February 3, 2026.
Police officers on patrol reportedly sighted a group of about five men at Goziri, a community near Vieri. The men were openly carrying single-barrel guns and cutlasses, raising concerns about public safety in the area.
Upon noticing the approaching police patrol vehicle, the suspects attempted to flee. However, the patrol team swiftly pursued them and successfully arrested three of the individuals. The suspects have been identified as Yahaya Samad, 27, Adams Alhassan, 37, and Yiriyang Boosi, 35.
A search conducted at the scene led to the retrieval of three single-barrel guns, three cutlasses, and twenty-three BB cartridges. During interrogation, the suspects reportedly admitted that they did not have valid licences to possess the firearms and ammunition.
The three suspects have since been remanded by the Wa Magistrate Court, presided over by His Worship Simon Kofi Bediako. They are scheduled to reappear in court on February 18, 2026. Meanwhile, police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects who managed to escape.
The Upper West Regional Police Command commended the vigilance and professionalism of the patrol team. The Command also cautioned individuals in possession of firearms without proper documentation to regularize them immediately or face legal consequences.
Police have reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and security across the region and called on the public to continue supporting law enforcement efforts.
