A tragic accident at the Golden Jubilee Terminal of the Tema Harbour has left a young importer fatally injured after being crushed from the waist down by a reach stacker during an offloading operation.
According to eyewitness accounts, the heartbreaking incident occurred when the heavy container-handling machine was reversing. The victim, who was reportedly standing behind the vehicle, was accidentally knocked down and run over by its massive tyres, resulting in severe injuries to his lower body.
Port workers and onlookers rushed to the scene to offer assistance, but the young man’s injuries were too severe. He was later pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby medical facility.
Authorities at the Tema Harbour and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) have yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident. However, investigations are expected to be launched to determine the exact cause and whether safety protocols were breached during the operation.
This tragic event has once again raised concerns about occupational safety standards and adherence to operational guidelines at the country’s ports, where heavy machinery is in constant use.
