Accra-Kumasi Expressway project to be built within three years - Ato Forson

Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to delivering one of the country’s most transformative road projects—the Accra–Kumasi Expressway—within an expected three-year construction window. The project, highlighted during his detailed breakdown of the 2026 Budget on PM Express, forms part of the government’s newly launched Big Push Infrastructure Programme.

The expressway is designed to dramatically reshape travel between Ghana’s two busiest cities. The planned 198.7-kilometre route will shorten the current journey, cutting down both travel time and the existing 250-kilometre distance. Beyond convenience, the project is expected to significantly reduce transport costs—estimated at nearly 40%—and stimulate extensive economic activity along the corridor.

Government projections show the expressway generating more than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction. It will feature critical infrastructure elements including major interchanges, modern bridges and improved access routes, all geared toward easing traffic flow and boosting safety.

The expressway falls under the GH¢30 billion allocation for the 2026 Big Push programme, which prioritizes nationwide infrastructure development. The initiative places strong emphasis on transportation, agriculture-linked roads, and long-term economic transformation.

While full technical timelines and contract details are expected to be outlined in supplementary documents, the minister’s remarks signal a strong determination to fast-track execution. The expressway, once completed, is expected to become a key economic artery linking the southern and northern sectors of the country.
