Former Energy Minister and Hohoe MP, John Peter Amewu, has urged delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rally behind Kennedy Ohene Agyapong in the party’s flagbearer race, arguing that he is the only candidate who can return the NPP to power in 2028.
According to Amewu, while Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia could eventually lead the party to victory in the long term, Kennedy Agyapong has the charisma, vision, and grassroots connection to win the next general elections.
> “Dr. Bawumia can give us power in 16 years’ time, but Kennedy Ohene Agyapong can give us power in 2028,” Amewu said.
He revealed that Agyapong never called or persuaded him to join his campaign, but he decided to do so after carefully assessing all five aspirants in the race.
> “When I looked at all the candidates, only Ken stood out — he’s a visionary, a philanthropist, and a businessman who can turn Ghana’s fortunes around,” he stated.
Amewu emphasized that Ghana should be managed like a business and, therefore, deserves a leader with a business mindset.
> “If Ghana were a business country, would you hand it to a professor, lawyer, or doctor to run? Definitely not — you’d give it to a businessman. That’s why Kennedy Ohene Agyapong is the right choice,” he said.
He described Kennedy Agyapong as humble and relatable, saying the Assin Central MP is not power-drunk and would remain connected to ordinary Ghanaians even as president.
> “It will shock you that when Ken becomes president, he will still move around in his 4x4 pickup and wear slippers to the office because he sees himself as one of you,” Amewu noted.
The Hohoe MP added that Kennedy Agyapong is a disciplined leader who would not hesitate to dismiss anyone, including his own appointees, if they misbehave.
> “Even if I get an appointment and fool around, he will not watch my face — he will fire me,” Amewu said.
