The community of Dunkwa Akyempim has been thrown into deep mourning following the shocking and heartbreaking tragedy in which a man, identified as Kwame Afriyie, set his wife Ama Dapaa and their children ablaze, killing them instantly before taking his own life. The horrific incident, which occurred after a prolonged domestic dispute, has left residents speechless and traumatized.
Reports indicate that the couple had been struggling with marital issues for several months. Some time ago, Kwame Afriyie was arrested for nearly killing two of his sons with a stick during a heated argument. He was sentenced to three weeks in jail, but his wife, Ama Dapaa, pleaded with the court for leniency, explaining that if he was kept in prison for long, there would be no one to care for their children. The court heeded her plea and granted him a short sentence.
After serving his term, Afriyie returned home and visited his in-laws, asking for forgiveness for his violent behavior. He begged the family to allow Ama Dapaa to return to him so they could continue their marriage peacefully. The family, believing he had changed, agreed to reconcile the couple.
Tragically, peace never returned. On the fateful evening, around 8:00 to 9:00 PM, Kwame Afriyie told his wife and children to go inside to sleep because it was late. Once they were inside, he locked the gate from outside, poured petrol around the house and even under the door so the fumes would spread inside. He then set the building on fire and fled. The blaze spread rapidly, trapping the entire family inside as neighbors struggled helplessly to save them. By the time the fire was extinguished, the bodies of Ama Dapaa, their children, including a seven-month-old baby, were burnt beyond recognition. Witnesses described the sight as unbearable, saying their intestines and flesh were exposed.
Later, the youth of the community organized a search, which led to another horrifying discovery — Kwame Afriyie’s body hanging from a rope in a nearby bush. It became clear that after murdering his entire family, he ended his own life.
On Tuesday, 12th November 2025, the victims were finally laid to rest in Dunkwa Akyempim. However, the burial itself has sparked public outrage and sadness after it was revealed that the bodies were brought to the cemetery in white sacks, with only Ama Dapaa buried in a casket. Many residents expressed shock and disappointment that the children and other victims were not given proper caskets, saying they deserved dignity and respect even in death. Some mourners said the sight of the sacks left them in tears and could not understand why the family would agree to such a burial arrangement.
The mass burial, conducted under heavy emotion, saw community members weeping uncontrollably as the victims were lowered into the ground. Residents have called on traditional leaders, churches, and social welfare institutions to intervene in future tragedies to ensure that victims of domestic violence receive not only justice but also a dignified farewell.
