According to the defecting members, the low turnout for Dr. Bawumia in the 2024 general elections exposed what they describe as serious manipulation during the NPP’s internal presidential primaries. They pointed to instances where Kennedy Agyapong reportedly received zero votes in some constituencies, while Dr. Bawumia received 100% of votes in certain areas, yet managed to get zero votes from those same areas in the general elections. To them, this clearly shows that internal results were “massaged” to favor Dr. Bawumia, leaving many grassroots members disillusioned.
They also accused Dr. Bawumia of failing to prioritize the welfare of delegates. They claimed he has been promising that Members of Parliament will receive appointments if he becomes president, yet has not shown any plans to directly support the delegates themselves. In contrast, they say Kennedy Agyapong has given a firm assurance that when he becomes president, he will help the delegates in meaningful ways because they are the ones who struggle during campaign seasons. This difference in attitude, they explained, pushed them to switch allegiance.
Another major issue they raised was the alleged hijacking of the YouStart initiative, which was originally designed to support vulnerable party members with loans to start small businesses. They claimed that individuals close to Dr. Bawumia and Samira Bawumia took over the programme for their own benefit, leaving the majority of delegates behind. This, they said, was another sign that the leadership did not care about the ordinary party worker.
They also expressed disappointment in the conduct of Kwame Baffoe Abronye, who they say has been repeatedly insulting people—especially Kennedy Agyapong—without Dr. Bawumia calling him to order. They believe this behavior is damaging the party’s image. They further referenced an internal election where Abronye campaigned heavily for his wife, yet she received only four votes, while a candidate they supported won the seat. To them, this proves that Abronye’s political influence has declined greatly due to his own actions.
The defecting members added that many NPP leaders only contact delegates during festive periods like Sala, usually sending text messages without offering any tangible support. Despite having their full information, these leaders never call to provide job opportunities or any form of assistance. The group says they are tired of following people who think only about their own interests.
In the end, they called on all NPP delegates to support Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, whom they believe is the only candidate who genuinely cares about the grassroots and will prioritize their welfare if he becomes president.
