President Mahama Orders Forensic Audit into 2024 African Games Expenditure

President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Auditor-General to conduct a forensic audit into the spending on the 13th African Games, which were hosted in Accra from March 4 to 23, 2024.

The move follows growing public concern over the US$245 million reportedly used for the event, covering infrastructure, logistics, and operational costs. Of that amount, about US$195 million was spent on new facilities, US$15 million on feeding athletes, and US$48 million on logistics and other services.

President Mahama said the audit would ensure full accountability and transparency in how state funds were utilised for the Games. He also confirmed that several officials have already been invited and questioned as part of the ongoing probe.

The directive comes amid reports that some service providers, including hotels and catering firms, are still owed payments for services rendered during the Games.

The 13th African Games, the first to be hosted by Ghana, were expected to boost sports development and infrastructure. However, questions about value for money and procurement irregularities have persisted since the event ended.

According to government sources, the forensic audit will review all contracts, payments, and procurement processes to determine whether there was any financial mismanagement. The findings are expected to be made public, with possible legal actions against any individuals or entities found culpable.

President Mahama said the exercise reflects his administration’s commitment to accountability, transparency, and anti-corruption reforms, emphasizing that the era of impunity in public expenditure “must end.”
