Two Young Ghanaians Jailed 35 Years for Robbery in Bekwai

In a shocking verdict that has caught the attention of many, the Bekwai Circuit Court in the Ashanti Region has sentenced two young men to a combined 35 years in prison with hard labour for their involvement in a robbery.

Presided over by His Honour Justice Isaac Appiatu, the court handed down the harsh sentences following a robbery that occurred on April 2, 2025, targeting a local trader, Agnes Opoku, near Bekwai Wesley Senior High School.

The two offenders, Yussif Yakubu (19) and Abubakar Sadiq (20), were found guilty of stealing the victim’s phone and other valuables. Justice Appiatu ruled that the severity of their actions warranted a strong message against such crimes, especially by the youth.

The sentences were broken down as follows:

Yussif Yakubu (19 years old) → 15 years imprisonment

Abubakar Sadiq (20 years old) → 20 years imprisonment

This case highlights growing concerns about youth involvement in crime in Ghana, raising questions about preventive measures and the role of community and government in addressing the root causes.

While some argue the sentences are harsh for such young offenders, the ruling sends a clear signal that violent crimes will be met with serious consequences.

The Bekwai Circuit Court has made it clear: robbery and violent theft will not be tolerated, and even young offenders must face the full weight of the law.
