Ghana to Deploy AI-Driven Road Monitoring System in 2026 – MTTD

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has announced plans to implement an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven road monitoring and enforcement system across the country beginning next year.

This was disclosed by Chief Superintendent Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director of Education, Research and Training at the MTTD, during a public engagement on road safety reforms.

According to Chief Supt. Obeng, the AI-driven system will leverage modern technology to enhance traffic monitoring, improve enforcement of road traffic regulations, and reduce human interference in policing processes. The initiative is expected to play a critical role in addressing reckless driving, speeding, and other traffic violations that continue to claim lives on Ghana’s roads.

“We will implement an AI-driven system on our roads next year,” he stated, noting that the move forms part of broader efforts to modernize traffic management and improve road safety outcomes nationwide.

The proposed system is expected to include intelligent surveillance cameras, automated detection of traffic offences, and data-driven analysis to support law enforcement and policy decisions. Authorities believe the technology will promote accountability among road users and strengthen compliance with traffic laws.

Road safety experts and stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a timely intervention in the fight against road accidents, which remain a major public safety concern in Ghana.

Further details on the rollout, pilot locations, and public education measures are expected to be announced in the coming months.
