A major security breach was narrowly averted in the Ashanti Region after the Ghana Police Service intercepted a passenger bus transporting a large consignment of high-powered ammunition, raising fresh concerns about the illegal movement of arms across the country.
The interception occurred on Thursday, 26 December 2025, at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier, where officers on routine patrol stopped a Kia Grandbird bus travelling from Accra through Walewale towards Paga, near Ghana’s northern border.
Concealed Ammunition Discovered During Search
According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, a thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition carefully concealed in two containers, suggesting a deliberate attempt to evade security checks. The discovery immediately triggered the arrest of the bus driver, Kwame Afram, and his mate, Godfred Essel, both of whom were taken into custody at the scene.
Police investigators believe the ammunition was being transported as part of an organised operation rather than an isolated incident, given the quantity involved and the method of concealment.
Intended Recipient Arrested in Walewale
Further intelligence-led investigations led to the arrest of a third suspect, Mohammed Siisu, aged 21, in Walewale on Friday, 27 December 2025. Police say the suspect had travelled to the area to receive the ammunition, strengthening suspicions of a coordinated arms trafficking network operating along major transport corridors.
Protective Gear and Paramilitary Items Recovered
A follow-up search of the bus revealed additional items hidden beneath the driver’s seat, including two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots. These items have heightened police concerns about the potential use of the ammunition for violent or criminal activities.
Investigations Intensify Amid Security Concerns
All three suspects remain in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations. The bus and all recovered exhibits have been impounded as evidence.
The Ghana Police Service has indicated that investigations are focused on identifying the source of the ammunition, tracking down possible accomplices, and determining the intended purpose of the weapons. Authorities say the operation underscores the importance of checkpoint surveillance in preventing the illegal circulation of firearms and safeguarding national security.
