• Deadly Ride at Tetegu Sparks Debate on Driver Safety and Gun Proliferation

The fatal shooting of a taxi driver at the Tetegu Overhead has sent shockwaves through the community, renewing public anxiety over the growing dangers faced by commercial drivers during late-night operations in Accra.

The incident occurred around 11:16 p.m. when a female passenger allegedly shot the driver inside his vehicle. Preliminary eyewitness accounts suggest the situation may have begun as a robbery attempt that escalated into a deadly confrontation. Bystanders reported hearing raised voices coming from the taxi moments before a gunshot rang out, drawing public attention to the scene.

According to witnesses, the argument intensified inside the vehicle, with the woman allegedly issuing a threat to shoot the driver. The warning was reportedly dismissed, a decision that proved fatal minutes later. The driver sustained gunshot injuries and was later confirmed dead, sparking panic and anger among onlookers.

Police officers arrived promptly and arrested the suspect at the scene. She is currently in police custody as investigators work to establish the full sequence of events, including how the suspect obtained the firearm and whether the act was premeditated or involved accomplices.

The Ghana Police Service has begun a detailed investigation and is expected to pursue charges once inquiries are concluded. Authorities have also appealed to the public for calm and cooperation, urging witnesses to provide any information that could assist the case.

Beyond the immediate tragedy, the incident has reignited debate over driver safety, the proliferation of firearms, and the vulnerability of taxi and ride-hailing operators who work long hours with minimal protection. Driver unions and residents are increasingly calling for enhanced night patrols, stricter gun control enforcement, and improved safety protocols to prevent similar incidents.

As the Tetegu community mourns yet another life lost to violent crime, many are questioning how a routine late-night fare ended in death and what concrete measures will be taken to ensure such incidents do not become the norm on Ghana’s roads.
