Fresh details emerging from the Ghana Police Service have cast new light on the fatal shooting of a taxi driver at Tetegu near Weija, an incident that has triggered intense public debate and scrutiny of police conduct.

According to official police investigations, the woman who allegedly shot and killed the taxi driver is a serving police officer. The incident, which occurred on the night of Sunday, January 19, 2026, reportedly followed a confrontation between the officer and the driver, who was operating a Hyundai i10 commercial taxi.

Preliminary findings released by the Police indicate that the confrontation escalated into a shooting, resulting in the driver sustaining gunshot injuries. He was rushed to the Police Hospital for urgent medical attention but was pronounced dead upon arrival, confirming the incident as a fatal shooting.

In a development that has further intensified public reaction, police investigators disclosed that after the shooting, the policewoman attempted to flee the scene. During this attempt, she was reportedly struck by a moving vehicle, leaving her with injuries to her head and both legs. She is currently on admission receiving medical treatment under police supervision.

Crime scene investigators recovered critical exhibits, including one spent 9mm cartridge, a magazine, and one live 9mm round, indicating that a service firearm was discharged during the incident. These items are expected to play a key role in forensic and ballistic investigations aimed at reconstructing what transpired.

The Police Service has not yet disclosed the identities of the deceased driver or the officer involved, citing ongoing investigations. However, the revelation that the officer allegedly attempted to leave the scene has sparked public outrage, with many questioning whether protocol was breached and whether the use of lethal force was justified.

Civil society voices and members of the public have renewed calls for accountability, transparency, and independent oversight in cases involving police use of firearms. Critics argue that the incident highlights deeper issues within law enforcement, including inadequate conflict de-escalation and insufficient checks on the use of deadly force in civilian encounters.

In a brief statement, the Ghana Police Service assured the public that investigations are ongoing and that all findings will be made known in due course. The statement, issued by the Public Affairs Directorate and signed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Richmond Mensah, emphasized that further updates would be communicated as investigations progress.

As the nation awaits the outcome of the probe, the Tetegu shooting has become a flashpoint in the broader conversation about policing, responsibility, and justice in Ghana. For the family of the deceased driver, answers remain elusive, while the public continues to demand clarity on how a roadside confrontation ended in death.
