• Violence Against Teacher at Kade SHTS Lands Students in Court With Jail as the Alternative
The Kade District Court has handed down sentences to four students found guilty of assaulting a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School (SHTS), bringing a decisive legal conclusion to a case that sparked national debate about discipline and safety in Ghana’s schools.
In its ruling, the court fined each of the four students GHC 3,800, with a clear breakdown of the penalty. GHC 1,800 is to be paid directly to the court, while GHC 2,000 is to be paid as compensation to the victim, Mr. Michael Quayson, the teacher who was assaulted. The court further ordered that failure to pay the full fine will result in a six-month custodial sentence for each offender.
The case stems from an assault incident at Kade SHTS that occurred in 2025 and later gained widespread attention after a video of the attack circulated on social media. The footage triggered public outrage and prompted swift action by law enforcement. Following investigations led by the Ghana Police Service, several suspects were arrested and subsequently arraigned before the court.
In delivering its judgment, the court underscored the seriousness of violence within educational institutions, emphasizing that schools must remain safe environments for both teaching and learning. The fine and alternative custodial sentence were intended to serve not only as punishment but also as a deterrent to others who might contemplate similar acts.
Education stakeholders, including teacher unions and parents, have welcomed the ruling, describing it as a strong statement against indiscipline and attacks on educators. Many have called for sustained collaboration between school authorities, parents, and security agencies to prevent future incidents.
The conviction and sentencing of the four students mark a significant step in reinforcing respect for teachers and the rule of law within Ghana’s education system. As schools resume normal activities, stakeholders continue to urge stricter enforcement of disciplinary codes and enhanced sensitization on conflict resolution to ensure that classrooms remain places of learning, not violence.
The case serves as a reminder that acts of assault, regardless of the setting, carry serious legal consequences.
