The Ashanti Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into a violent confrontation between a police patrol team and a group of civilians at Bepotenten Sukuum in the Jacobu District.
According to an official statement, the incident occurred on 23rd January 2026 during a routine patrol operation. Officers reportedly retrieved a pump-action gun from a 15-year-old boy and instructed him to notify the owner to report to the police station with the appropriate documentation to validate lawful possession of the weapon.
However, while the patrol team was returning from the exercise, they were reportedly confronted by a large crowd estimated at about 100 individuals. The group allegedly blocked the road and was said to be armed with cutlasses and firearms. The situation escalated into a physical altercation during which the officers were attacked, and a service rifle was seized from one of them.
Police sources indicate that in the ensuing confrontation, the individual who allegedly took possession of the service rifle was shot. Another person also sustained injuries. The service rifle was subsequently retrieved by the officers.
The Ashanti Regional Police Command has cautioned members of the public against engaging in acts of violence against law enforcement personnel. Authorities emphasized that individuals involved in such attacks will be identified, pursued, and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
