The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Ayensuano District in the Eastern Region, Hon. Joshua Yaw Lartey, has led a special team to arrest four illegal miners (galamsey operators) who were secretly engaging in mining activities deep in the bush at Anum Apapamu.
The operation, which took place at night, was part of the district’s intensified efforts to clamp down on illegal mining activities that continue to destroy farmlands, pollute water bodies, and pose serious threats to the environment and public health.
According to reports, Hon. Lartey and his team acted swiftly after receiving intelligence that some individuals were operating under the cover of darkness to avoid detection. The suspects were apprehended on the spot with mining tools and equipment believed to be used for their illegal operations.
Hon. Lartey emphasized that the District Security Council (DISEC) will not tolerate any form of galamsey in Ayensuano, warning that similar joint operations will continue until the menace is completely eradicated.
He urged community members to support the fight by reporting illegal miners to authorities, stressing that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility.
The arrested suspects have been handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.
