Self-Acclaimed Soldier Fined GH₵3,600 by Tuobodom District Court for Impersonation

The Tuobodom District Court, presided over by His Worship Kwadwo Frempong Manso, has fined a 33-year-old man, Maxwell Sackettey, GH₵3,600 for impersonating a military officer. In default, he will serve five months in prison. He was also ordered to sign a bond of good behaviour, after being convicted of impersonation contrary to Section 134 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

How He Was Caught

According to Inspector Ofori Yeboah, who presented the facts in court, the incident occurred on November 13, 2025, around 6:00 a.m., during an ongoing military recruitment exercise at the Techiman Urban Astro Turf near the Methodist Park.

Sackettey, fully dressed in an army-green military T-shirt, camouflage trousers, desert boots, and other military gear, was seen engaging unsuspecting applicants with the intention of defrauding them. His behaviour raised suspicion among officers on duty.

When questioned, Sackettey admitted on the spot that he was not a military officer.

Arrest and Investigation

He was immediately arrested and handed over to the Regional PID, who transferred him to the Techiman Divisional Headquarters for further investigation. He reportedly cooperated during the process.

Later that day, he was paraded before the Techiman Divisional Commander, Chief Superintendent Albert Fii-Ochil, where he again confirmed that he had no affiliation with the Ghana Armed Forces.

Investigations revealed that on November 12, 2025, the day before his arrest, Sackettey had approached a man identified as Kwadwo Benjamin Bagbela at the same recruitment center. He allegedly posed as a military officer and demanded money in exchange for helping Bagbela’s two brothers get through the recruitment process. The family, however, refused to pay him.

During his caution statement, Sackettey claimed that an ex-military officer, Osei Richard, supplied him with the military accoutrements he wore that day.

Court Decision

Following the investigation, Sackettey was charged and brought before the Tuobodom District Court, where he was convicted and sentenced.

The ruling serves as another warning to individuals attempting to exploit Ghana’s recruitment processes for fraudulent activities.
