Telecel Partners Government to Train 100,000 Ghanaian Youth Under the One Million Coders Programme

In a major boost to Ghana’s digital skills ecosystem, Telecel Group has signed a strategic agreement with the Government of Ghana to train 100,000 young people in coding and digital competencies over the next four years under the One Million Coders Programme.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formalised at a ceremony in Accra, witnessed by senior officials from the Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations. Under the partnership, Telecel will provide free access to its Startocode digital learning platform to enrolled participants.

Start code offers a multilingual, self-paced digital curriculum that includes interactive lessons and hands-on projects across key areas such as web development, Python programming, data analytics and digital entrepreneurship. The platform has already helped thousands across the African continent build practical, job-ready technology skills.

Driving Inclusive Digital Transformation

According to Telecel Group CEO Moh Damush, the collaboration aligns with Telecel’s broader mission to accelerate digital transformation and expand opportunities for young people in Ghana’s emerging digital economy. He emphasised that the partnership aims not just to train learners, but to help empower them to thrive in the global technology ecosystem.

The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Sam George, welcomed the collaboration, describing it as a transformative step in bridging Ghana’s digital skills gap. He noted that the One Million Coders Programme is a cornerstone of the country’s broader digital agenda, aiming to unlock career pathways and foster sustainable livelihoods for young Ghanaians.

A Strategic Component of National Digital Policy

The initiative forms part of the Government of Ghana’s broader digital empowerment strategy, which seeks to equip one million citizens with digital and tech skills relevant for the 21st-century economy. Launched by President John Dramani Mahama in April 2025, the One Million Coders Programme includes training in areas such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity and network support — all geared toward expanding the nation’s digital capacity.

By collaborating with a private sector partner like Telecel, the Government reinforces its commitment to inclusive digital education — ensuring youth from diverse regions and socioeconomic backgrounds can access valuable skills training. The partnership also underscores a shared public-private vision to position Ghana as a leading technology hub in West Africa.

Looking Ahead

Beyond technical training, the agreement envisages mentorship opportunities and community engagement programmes that support sustained learning and professional development. These additional elements are designed to help trainees transition from learning to employment or entrepreneurship within the digital economy.

As Ghana continues to prioritise digital transformation, initiatives like this Telecel-Government partnership highlight how collaborative efforts can unlock future opportunities for young Ghanaians — enabling them to contribute meaningfully to national development and compete on the global stage.
